Reshared post from Euro Maestro

If you want to know when computers took over the world, it happened in May of 1997, when Kasparov fell to Deep Blue, almost 15 years ago. It happened halfway through Game 2 of the set; you can watch the whole set on YouTube, but this was the important game:

Deep Blue vs Garry Kasparov (1997, Game 2)

Euro Maestro originally shared this post:

Man vs Machine – the quest for artificial intelligence

The year is 1997. Garry Kasparov, the world's best computer player has never lost a computer match. In his life.

The year earlier he soundly defeated Deep Blue, a chess computer designed by IBM. He offered IBM a rematch which IBM was only too glad to accept. Watch the clip to see what happens.

IBM subsequently developed another computer called Watson to take on the strongest human players in Jeopardy, see my post about that.

+Mike Elgan also discusses the power of computers in analyzing film dialogue. How long before they write it ?

I for one welcome our new computer overlords.

How well do you play chess against a computer ?

Which artificial intelligence challenges remain ? When will a computer pass the Turing test ?

Watch this clip about this historic event matching the two strongest chess players at that time.
